Cracked heels are more than a cosmetic nuisance. When the skin around the heel becomes dry, thick, and rigid, pressure from standing and walking can pull it apart. Deeper heel fissures can become painful, bleed, and give bacteria or fungi a way into the skin. Fortunately, most uncomplicated dry, cracked heels can be managed at home by addressing the thick callus, restoring flexibility to the skin, and reducing the conditions that cause the cracks to return.
My approach to cracked heels began with firsthand experience—not by studying other heel-care products. I tested different essential oils in our Youth-Derm® aloe cream base while working to understand the balance between reducing callus, restoring moisture, and avoiding the continuously damp conditions that can encourage fungal problems.
From that experience, I came to see three primary at-home treatments for uncomplicated dry, cracked heels: gentle foot filing, an optional chemical foot peel as an occasional reset, and consistent moisturizing with intelligent moisture control.

Why Do Heels Crack?
A cracked heel usually begins with two forces working together: the skin loses moisture and flexibility while body weight and friction push the heel’s natural fat pad outward.
A rim of thick, callused skin often develops around the outside of the heel. Because that callus is stiff, it cannot stretch normally as the heel expands under pressure. Eventually, the dry outer skin begins to split.
Common causes and contributing factors include:
- Dry air and low humidity
- Aging skin or a naturally dry skin barrier
- Hot showers or harsh cleansers
- Standing for long periods
- Walking barefoot on hard floors
- Repeated pressure or friction
- Open-backed shoes and flip-flops
- Worn-out or poorly fitting footwear
- Excess body weight or changes in the way a person walks
- A buildup of thick, inflexible callused skin
- Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis
- Athlete’s foot, particularly when it causes dry, scaly skin
- Medical conditions that affect the skin, sensation, circulation, or healing
Most cracked heels result from some combination of dryness, callus, and pressure. However, repeatedly severe heel fissures deserve a closer look. Treating surface dryness alone will not completely solve an untreated fungal infection, inflammatory skin condition, footwear problem, or underlying medical issue.
Can Cracked Heels Be Caused by Fungus?
Fungus is not the cause of every cracked heel, but it can contribute to the problem.
Athlete’s foot, medically known as tinea pedis, may cause itching, burning, redness, scaling, peeling, or cracks. It frequently begins between the toes, but one form can spread across the sole and sides of the foot in a pattern that resembles a moccasin.
This form of athlete’s foot may resemble ordinary dry skin. The skin can become powdery, scaly, and increasingly dry without the obvious soggy or inflamed appearance people commonly associate with a fungal infection.
The Moisture Versus Fungus Dilemma
Cracked heel skin needs moisture to remain flexible, but fungi tend to thrive in warm, damp environments. This can make foot care seem contradictory: should the feet be moisturized or kept dry?
The practical answer is to treat different areas according to their needs:
- Moisturize the dry heel and callused areas.
- Keep the spaces between the toes clean and thoroughly dry.
- Do not pack thick moisturizing cream between the toes.
- Change damp socks promptly.
- Allow shoes to dry completely between uses.
- Rotate breathable shoes rather than wearing the same damp pair every day.
- If athlete’s foot is suspected, use an appropriate antifungal treatment or consult a pharmacist or healthcare professional.
Moisturizing the heel does not automatically cause a fungal infection. The greater concerns are leaving moisture trapped between the toes and failing to recognize and treat a fungal infection that is already present.
Is It Safe to Treat Cracked Heels at Home?
Before using a foot file or chemical peel, make sure your feet are appropriate for home care.
Do not file or chemically peel your feet without professional guidance if you have:
- Diabetes
- Neuropathy or reduced feeling in your feet
- Poor circulation
- A history of foot ulcers
- Immune suppression
- An active infection
- A deep, bleeding, or gaping fissure
- Significant pain or swelling
- Difficulty seeing, reaching, or safely treating your feet
These conditions can make a small injury more difficult to notice and more dangerous. A podiatrist or other qualified healthcare professional can reduce thick callus safely and determine whether another condition is contributing to the problem.
Three At-Home Treatments for Dry, Cracked Heels
Each of the following treatments has a different job. Filing gradually reduces thick callus. A chemical peel can provide an occasional, more complete reset. Moisturizing restores and maintains flexibility in the skin.
Treatment 1: Gently File Thick, Dead Skin
A pumice stone or foot file can reduce the stiff outer callus. Removing some of this dead skin allows the heel to flex more naturally and makes it easier for moisturizing cream to reach the skin underneath.
The goal is not to make the heel perfectly smooth in one session. It is better to remove a small amount regularly than to remove too much every few weeks.
- Use light pressure.
- Stop before the skin becomes tender, hot, pink, or painful.
- Never use a razor, knife, scissors, or callus blade at home.
- Do not file directly across an open, bleeding, inflamed, or infected fissure.
- Do not share foot files or pumice stones.
- Clean or replace the filing surface according to the manufacturer’s directions.
I use a stainless steel foot file with replaceable abrasive pads. I prefer stainless steel because many of the plastic foot files that appear first in product searches can be flimsy and may eventually bend or break.
The 60-grit replacement pads I use are quite coarse and may be too aggressive for some people. If you use a similarly coarse pad, apply very light pressure and stop early. Someone new to foot filing may be better off beginning with a finer grit (higher grit numbers like 80, 100, and especially 180 are less coarse).
A few gentle passes once or twice a week should be enough for many people. If you find yourself creating redness, tenderness, pain, or bleeding, you are removing too much.

Treatment 2: Consider an Optional Foot Peel as a Reset
I think of a chemical foot peel as an occasional reset rather than a regular treatment. It is optional, and not everyone with dry heels needs one.
Caution: Do not use a chemical foot peel on deep or painful heel cracks.
If your fissures are bleeding, nearly bleeding, raw, inflamed, or painful, postpone the peel. Exfoliating acids can enter damaged skin and cause significant burning, irritation, or further injury.
First concentrate on daily moisturizing, protecting the fissures, reducing pressure on the heels, wearing supportive footwear, and addressing any infection or underlying condition. If it can be done safely, gently reduce only the thick, intact callus surrounding the cracks—never file directly across an open or painful fissure.
Wait until the skin has completely closed and there is no bleeding, raw skin, inflammation, or pain before considering a chemical peel. Seek care from a podiatrist or another qualified healthcare professional if a fissure is deep, remains painful, shows signs of infection, or does not improve.
When a substantial layer of dead skin and callus has accumulated, one properly performed peel may help clear the way for ongoing moisturizing and gentle maintenance. Ideally, it should not need to become a frequent habit.
Most foot peels use disposable booties containing exfoliating ingredients such as lactic acid, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid. Depending on the product, the feet typically remain in the booties for approximately an hour before being thoroughly washed.
The acids belong to this exfoliating step—not to the daily moisturizing step in the routine. Do not combine a chemical peel with aggressive filing, scrubbing, or other exfoliating acids.
What to Expect After a Foot Peel
A chemical foot peel does not usually produce immediate shedding. The exfoliating ingredients begin loosening the outer layers of dead skin, but the most noticeable peeling often occurs several days later.
The following timeline reflects my experience and the experience of someone else in my household. Your results and timing may differ depending on the product, the thickness of your calluses, and your individual skin.
Day 1: Your Skin May Look Shiny
Soon after the peel, the skin may look unusually smooth, shiny, or almost plastic. It may simply look different rather than immediately looking better. In my experience, this was an early sign that the outer layer was beginning to separate.
This appearance should not be accompanied by significant burning, blistering, swelling, or pain. Those symptoms are not part of normal exfoliation and may indicate irritation or injury.
Days 2–4: Light Flaking May Begin
During the first few days, you may notice small flakes that look almost like dandruff. They may collect inside your socks, on the floor, or in your bed.
It can be helpful to wear clean socks to contain the loose skin and wash your bedding as needed. Do not pull, scrape, or aggressively rub skin that is still attached.
Around Day 5: The Dramatic Peeling May Begin
Around the fifth day, much larger pieces of dead skin may begin loosening from the soles and sides of the feet. This is the stage when you may wonder whether you made a terrible mistake.
The feet can temporarily look considerably worse than they did before the peel—even when the process is progressing normally. Large areas of loose, white skin can be especially inconvenient for anyone whose bare feet are visible at work, such as a lifeguard, yoga instructor, dancer, swim instructor, or fitness professional.
If that describes you, schedule the peel when you have at least a week without an event, vacation, photo session, competition, or other situation in which you want your feet to look presentable.
Around Day 7: Most Major Shedding May Be Over
By approximately one week, much of the larger loose skin may have released. Some smaller areas may continue peeling, particularly around thicker calluses, the toes, or the edges of the heels.
Continue allowing the skin to shed naturally. Pulling attached skin can remove living tissue along with the dead layer, causing pain, bleeding, and a possible opening for infection.
Around Day 10: The Final Result Becomes Apparent
By approximately 10 days, most of the visible peeling may be finished. In our experience, this was when the difference became impressive: the feet felt noticeably softer and looked much better than they did before the peel.
A foot peel removes accumulated dead skin, but it does not correct what caused that skin to become dry and thick. Daily moisturizing, occasional gentle filing, appropriate footwear, proper cleansing, and moisture control are what help maintain the result.

- It may reduce callus that would otherwise require numerous filing sessions.

Foot-Peel Disadvantages and Precautions
- The delayed peeling can be dramatic and messy.
- The feet may temporarily look worse before they look better.
- Exfoliating acids may sting or irritate damaged skin.
- The depth of exfoliation is more difficult to control than gentle filing.
- A foot peel does not correct pressure, footwear, dryness, fungus, or another condition that caused the callus.
- It should not be used over open, bleeding, inflamed, or infected fissures.

Treatment 3: Moisturize Consistently and Control Moisture
Once excess callus has been reduced, the heel needs consistent moisture to remain soft and flexible. This is the foundation of long-term maintenance.
Apply a rich moisturizing cream to clean, dry heel skin. Use enough to cover the dry area without leaving a large amount sitting on the surface. Allow it to absorb before walking because any rich heel cream can make the bottom of the feet slippery.
The objective is not to keep the entire foot damp. Moisturize the heel and other dry areas while keeping the spaces between the toes clean and dry.
Continue moisturizing after the visible cracks have disappeared. If you wait until the skin is hard and splitting again, you are repeatedly starting the process over.

Not every ingredient in a properly made cream is included for its direct effect on cracked skin. Some ingredients stabilize the formula, keep its oil and water portions properly blended, improve its texture, or protect the finished product.

Clean Your Feet Without Overdrying Them
Wash your feet with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, or soak them for approximately 5 to 10 minutes before gentle filing. The objective is to clean the skin and briefly soften the outer callus—not to leave the feet waterlogged.
Long, hot soaks can strip protective oils from the skin and make dryness worse. After washing or soaking, pat the feet dry and carefully dry between every toe.
Treat Athlete’s Foot When Necessary
If you have persistent itching, burning, scaling, peeling, cracking between the toes, or a powdery rash spreading across the sole, consider athlete’s foot as a possible cause.
Over-the-counter antifungal treatments are available as creams, sprays, and powders. Follow the label or ask a pharmacist or healthcare professional which treatment is appropriate for you.
Do not assume that moisturizer, tea tree oil, vinegar, or another home remedy will eradicate a diagnosed fungal infection. Treat the infection directly while continuing to care appropriately for the dry heel.
Reduce Pressure and Friction
Moisturizing the heel will only go so far if the same pressure repeatedly pulls the crack apart.
- Wear well-fitting, cushioned shoes with a supportive or closed heel.
- Avoid barefoot walking while heel fissures are healing.
- Limit flip-flops and other open-backed shoes.
- Replace footwear that is worn down or no longer fits correctly.
