QUICK ANSWER: IS ALOE VERA SAFE TO DRINK?
Properly prepared aloe vera made from the inner leaf gel is safe to drink. Safety concerns come from studies that examined outer leaf extracts, which contain laxative compounds not present in correctly filleted aloe gel.
Aloe vera has a long history of traditional use—but many people still ask a reasonable question: is aloe vera gel or juice actually safe to drink?
Conflicting information online has left consumers understandably confused. Some articles praise aloe as a digestive and immune-supporting food, while others cite studies suggesting aloe may be harmful. Both claims exist—but they are not talking about the same part of the plant.
Why Aloe Vera Safety Is Confusing
Concerns about aloe safety largely stem from scientific studies referenced by respected institutions, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH). When people see these studies cited, they naturally question whether drinking aloe is safe.
What’s often missed is what form of aloe was actually tested.
Inner Leaf Gel vs. Outer Leaf Extract
Most reputable aloe products are made from the inner leaf gel only. This clear, mucilaginous filet is the part traditionally consumed as food.
Some safety studies, however, examined outer leaf extracts—preparations made by extracting compounds from the outer leaf. These substances contain naturally occurring compounds that serve as the plant’s defense system.
This distinction is critical.
A Simple Food Comparison

Consider an orange.
You eat the inside—not the peel.
Orange peels contain compounds like d-limonene that act as natural pesticides. Aloe leaves function similarly. The outer leaf contains aloe latex (also called aloin or barbaloin), a bitter anthraquinone compound known for its laxative and digestive-irritating effects.
That outer portion is not intended to be consumed as food.
What the Studies Actually Tested
In the frequently cited animal studies, researchers used preparations made from:
- Outer leaf material
- Whole-leaf extracts with the inner gel removed
- Concentrated aloe latex compounds
These studies did not evaluate properly prepared inner leaf aloe vera gel, which is what people drink.
The digestive irritation observed in animals is consistent with what is already known about aloe latex—it acts as a laxative. That finding does not apply to inner leaf gel.
What Makes Aloe Vera Safe to Drink

High-quality aloe vera products:
- Remove the outer leaf entirely
- Allow aloe latex to drain away
- Use inner filet only
- Avoid harsh chemical extraction
When prepared this way, aloe vera gel has been consumed safely for generations.
Independent laboratory testing has shown that properly prepared inner-leaf aloe contains only trace amounts of aloin, far below levels associated with adverse effects.
A Note About “Whole Leaf” Aloe Drinks
Some aloe drinks on the market are labeled “whole leaf.” While modern filtration has reduced aloin levels in many of these products, inner-leaf-only aloe remains the highest-grade and most gentle option, especially for regular consumption.
Bottom Line
Yes—aloe vera is safe to drink when it is properly prepared from the inner leaf gel.
Safety concerns arise from studies using outer-leaf extracts, not from the aloe gel traditionally consumed as food.

Hello !
My dad is 92 years old. He suffers of constipation. He also has tummy aches often. I am wondering if this drink will be safe for him?
Thank you so much in advance
When it comes to foods such as the aloe from Haley Nutrition, after 6 months, age is not really a factor that will determine it’s safety.
Hi,
Just wondering if your aloe is safe during the last trimester of pregnancy. I read that it can cathartic and cause uterine contractions. Is this the outer portion of the leaf that has these properties?
It is the outer portions that can cause uterine contractions. The inner portion is more like a food… though a “super food”. Yet at the same time, the FDA warning regarding raw unpasteurized products still applies… though we have never found pathogenic bacteria in our aloe.
Hi Dr. Haley’
The first time I used your product, I didn’t let it thaw completely so my first glass was thin liquid with no gel and very bitter.
Are there any safety concerns in drinking this thin liquid component In a concentrated form ?
It was very bitter as opposed to when I drank the gel when it was thawed which was fairly tasteless.
Thank you
There are no concerns. Even a few PPM aloin is extremely bitter which is what you likely experienced. However we calculated it to hundreds of gallons worth of our aloe vera would have to be consumed in a day to reach the dangerous levels of aloin – you will drown in our aloe vera before you consume too much aloin.
Hi Dr. Haley, does drinking Aloe Vera gel everyday lower red blood cells/iron levels and white blood cells? Please explain.
Last December, I bought organic whole aloe leaf, I only use the white part inside with no green part. I used 1 inch per day and blend that 1 inch with 1cup of water and drink it. I did that for several weeks. In January 18 2010, my CBC showed lower white 1000 and red blood cell/iron was 9. Six months prior to drinking aloe gel, my CBC was normal. I never had these readings before in my life. Does drinking the aloe lower my iron and white blood cell? I plan on drinking Stockton Aloe1 so I want to make sure. Thanks a lot.
I was unable to find research suggesting aloe vera lowers blood cell counts, but did find this which suggests it is beneficial for anemia, lymphocyte % may increase, and neutrophils % decrease https://academicjournals.org/journal/AJPP/article-full-text-pdf/390F52F44652
Thank you so very much for this wonderful article Dr. Haley. It clarifies a lot for me and answered my questions. God bless you.
I’ve been drinking Aloe Vera with Coconut water lately. It’s nice after a long bike ride.
Hello,
The freeze thaw thing seems a little confusing. I am wondering if you would receive the same benefits freezing the Aloe into Ice cubes then mixing the frozen cubes into a smoothy for ingestion.
Thanks,
Hap
Yes, however, when in a cube form, there is usually more surface area exposed to the air… which means more freezer burn.
Hi, are you familiar with Frei Zago Romanos Aloe Aborescens recipe… and the research and book he wrote about “Cancer can be cured” … point is… in the recipe they mix the whole leaf + honey and a 1% alcohol.
The recipe is recommended on Cancer Tutor. However I was wondering how this can be… if NIH found out that the aloin is carciogenic. Is it safe to take his recipe, as it has whole leafs in it`?
Thanks
NIH found out that large amounts of aloin extract (outer leaf only) causes the tissues that secrete mucous to increase in size… probably to secrete more protective mucous because only the irritant was given. This adaptive change is called “cancer”. It was a study to show that aloin (by itself) could cause problems. They wanted to demonstrate that aloin was NOT a safe laxative. The recipe you are referencing uses “whole leaf”… includes the healing soothing aspect of the plant which should balance the outer leaf part… however, research has never been done on whole leaf as it relates to intestinal cancer.
It is a yes or no question. My kid just drank some and I need to know if I should take her to the hospital and this page was no help.
I slice and soak whole aloe leaf in a bottle of water, to be taken every morning before food. How safe or unsafe could that be pls.
I disagree with using it this way, but many do without problems. So it seems pretty safe.
Tried Aloe Vera Juice for the first time. 5 hours later had bad stomach pains and violent diahrhea. Became dehydrated, couldnt eat and had terrible muscle cramps. Two days later still feeling after effects. But on bright side i am down 5 lbs.
The key word was “juice”. Aloe “juice” products tend to be either “whole leaf” and / or include other ingredients. Pure Aloe gel does not have that effect.
Dear Dr. Haley,
I grow Aloe Vera in my yard. Since you are not promoting your product and trying to help:
Question #1 : Is it safe to ingest pure Aloe Vera gel spooned out of the skin? If so what is the maximum amount a person should ingest a day ? (in ounces, teaspoons or milligrams please) I know it vries by height weight and over all health of a person.
Question #2 how much pure Aloe Vera gel spooned out of the skin will provide 1 gram of plant sterols?(in ounces, teaspoons or milligrams please) .
2 grams (2000 MG) of plant sterols is required each day for people with high cholesterol.
I recently learned that among other benefits, Aloe Vera gel is a good source of plant sterols, which reduces LDL, and good for preventing type 2 diabetics and the production of insulin for diabetics.
Regarding how much you can drink… it depends on your specie, how you extract the gel (how much aloin gets in your gel) and a few other factors… find out more here: https://haleynutrition.com/how-much-aloe-vera-juice-should-i-drink/
Regarding plant sterols… I don’t know. I know lots of people with HBP and diabetes use aloe vera and claim it helps them… but I am unfamiliar with how much and whether the benefits are from plant sterols. I might run that one by the IASC.org
Your comparison of aloe leaf to orange peel, or d-limonene has me wondering if that is a good comparison. I have used organic d-limonene for years to help with stomach issues such as gastritis, it works, even the Life Extension Foundation has a d-limonene product for that reason. I don’t have them at hand, but I have read many positive scientific reports on the benefits of consuming d-limonene. Here is the product I use: http://www.purehealthdiscounts.com/limonene.htm
I would love to hear your opinion on this, and if it is still negative, could you provide me with any information verifying d-limonene’s negative effects health-wise?
I just re-read… to make sure it was a good comparison. I feel good about it. You see, in the study, they gave rats mega-doses of of aloe vera outer-leaf extract. d-limonene may have some medicinal benefits in small amounts. It probably was not intended to be eaten as an isolate apart from the orange though. d-limonene is NOT a “whole food”. Much in the same way that large doses of d-limonene will cause upset stomach… the very same symptom people use d-limonene to relieve. The point, however, is that in the study, they wanted to show “aloin” to be dangerous… and accomplished that by giving rats large amounts.
Do you know why the NIH only tested the outer part of the leaf?
From what I understand, some companies were putting the outer leaf sap in powder form… into capsules to sell as a laxative.
I’m trying to find answers after overdosing on aloe water. My liver went into shock and it was presumed end stage cihrrosis. After a year in the transplant list at Mt Saiani in NYC my liver suddenly turned around. Could my sickness stem from this???? I was not sick until drinking pint glasses of pure aloe water. It came hard and fast. Please help me in trying to find answers.
I am not sure what “aloe water” is. If it is pure water extracted from aloe, certainly it was not the cause. But if you put a slice of aloe leaf in water to make “aloe water”, then maybe…
So doctor you are saying that the gel inside the plant is good but the leaf itself is only used in small amounts when you are in need of a quick digestive cure. But the jail itself is good and readily used for all type of ailments and illnesses am I right and that assessment
The outer leaf in small amounts might be a gut flush… but not a cure…
Regarding aloe used for all types of ailments and illnesses… it is true that people use aloe vera for many of their illnesses… but I can’t say that the gel could be used for illnesses even if people do use it for illnesses. There is some science suggesting it could help some conditions. A search on PubMed.gov will give better scientific insight.
Can aloe vera juice be used to aid in healing hernias?
It can support the body during healing… but aloe vera doesn’t heal hernias.

After closer examination, I see that basically this site is selling stuff that almost killed me., I’m sure I won’t get answers and my post with questions will be deleted. Hopefully not ?
Julie, this site is for the benefit of the people… this is now the 4rd post of yours on this same page that I am approving. I only deleted the one that was an exact duplicate of your previous post. But I am certain that what we manufacture was nothing like whatever you drank. So please tell us exactly what “aloe water” is.
Thank you for the information. Are you familiar with fatty liver condition known as N.A.S.H.? I was diagnosed last year. I like that the aloe water seems to help me with a sensitive stomach but want to be careful with my liver. Are you aware of any studies that deal with aloe water & fatty liver?
Thank you again.
I am not aware of any studies related to this.
Be careful!!!! I was hospitalized for a year after overdosing in aloe water. It was after my daughter’s tragic death and I was drinking a lot of aloe water thinking I was doing good staying away from alcohol. No one told me that it’s small doses only
Please share what “aloe water” is for the benefit of anyone that might see this.
Hello Dr. Haley,

Please do call during our open hours and schedule an appointment.
do think that soaking Aloe Vera leafs in water for a few minutes is enough to get rid of the Aloins ?
That is what we do… and we test between 1 and 4 ppm aloin… which is extremely low… so, yes.
Hi , its me from Nepal ,i’m also interest to ask some question hope i get the answer from you .I’m also suffering from constipation problem from long period of time when i’m 15 years old the constipation problem started but the time there is no any stomach pain problem inside ,only one thing that my whole body fell fatigue and felling hot inside .And that time i took different type of Aurvedic medicine and taking Aciloc 150 many time but can’t solve my problem .
when i’m 24 somehow searching in internet n different other person told Aloe-Vera was good for stomach n intestine problem, so at that time its a period of winter starting here in nepal(Nov 2013) I bought from the market n drink three times a day morning-afternoon-evening at least 2 month .when i’m taking those juice at that time its fine i have no any constipation problem but when 4-5 bottles i finish ,i’m good n no any constipation problem but i severe problem of VITAMIN D deficieny and need of sunlight and taking a lots of protein (ie egg, meat …) After 2 years I’m good in vitamin d but having same condition in constipation ,these 2 years i’m far from these ALOE-VERA juice, so these days watery in mouth and wound inside mouth and having constipation again and acid comes in throat .How can i cure permanently ,Can i again using Aloe-Vera does it good for my health ???
The yellow part of the leaf close to the trunk would have a lactive effect. There is one thing you should investigate though, the yellow part contains aloin wich would be a carcinogenic according to the FDA. I trust the FDA as any other three letter government organisation which is zero, so search in that direction. It might just be that it’s just bogus and then you have the perfect natural cure for your ailement.
IT is very confusing. It worked for this person and then it didn’t why not? Either it is good for you or it is not.which one is it?
are u having sufficient water (3-5 lts) ?
looking at ur comments, u need to consult a doctor.
Can you mix it with something so that it will taste better?
To one person, it has no flavor at all. To another, the same bottle is bitter. To the one that tastes bitterness, I suggest a tad bit of stevia leaf extract. To the one that can’t stand the texture, shake in a little tart cherry concentrate… think “un-cured jello”.
Mix it with dialuted buttermilk, pinch of salt and half tea spoon of lime juice. It’s a great drink to taste then.
It may be safe, but your taste buds might warn you differently! It is not likely to be the base of the next big cocktail sensation!
