Is it OK To Re-Freeze Aloe Vera In Glass?

SHORT ANSWER: CAN I REFREEZE ALOE #1® IN GLASS?

Haley Nutrition does not recommend refreezing aloe vera in glass because aloe gel expands aggressively when frozen and frequently breaks glass jars. BPA-free plastic containers, especially HDPE or polypropylene, are safer and more reliable for freezing raw aloe vera gel.

Why Frozen Aloe Vera Breaks Glass Jars

Broken Jars of Frozen Aloe

Over decades of producing and shipping raw aloe vera gel, we’ve repeatedly observed the same outcome:
aloe vera expands more forcefully than water when it freezes.

Even customers with extensive canning and freezing experience have reported complete aloe losses due to shattered jars. In one such case, a customer later shared photos of every glass jar broken in her freezer—despite careful preparation.

This expansion is not theoretical. It’s something we’ve seen again and again in real kitchens and real freezers.

Can Aloe Vera Sometimes Be Refrozen in Glass?

Yes—some customers do succeed.

One customer, Sharon, shared that she freezes aloe in straight-sided pint mason jars, leaving sufficient headspace as indicated by the jar’s freeze line. Her experience mirrors that of others who use ideal jar geometry and careful technique.

That said, outcomes are inconsistent.

👉 Important: While it can work, Haley Nutrition cannot accept responsibility for broken glass, product loss, or injury when aloe is refrozen in glass containers.

Why We Recommend Plastic Instead of Glass

We understand and share concerns about plastic use in food. Plastics can leach chemicals, and some compounds are known endocrine disruptors.

However, context matters.

Why Freezing in Plastic Is Lower Risk

  • Chemical leaching increases with heat, not cold
  • Molecular activity slows dramatically at freezer temperatures
  • Using containers that have already had time to gas-off reduces exposure further

Unlike bottled water—which is often filled immediately after bottles are manufactured—reusable food containers have typically cured for long periods before use.

Best practice:
Fill containers while the aloe is already cold and place them directly into the freezer.

What Type of Plastic Is Best for Freezing Aloe Vera?

We recommend doing your own research, but here’s what we use and why:

Our Preferred Options

  1. #2 HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
    • Commonly used for juice bottles and milk jugs
    • BPA-free, stable, and well-suited for freezing liquids
  2. #5 PP (Polypropylene)

Some customers prefer polypropylene containers like wide-top stackable cups because they accommodate expansion without stress points.

Bottom Line

  • Aloe vera expands powerfully when frozen
  • Glass jars frequently break—even when handled carefully
  • Plastic containers dramatically reduce breakage risk
  • Freezing temperatures minimize plastic leaching concerns

For safety, reliability, and product preservation, plastic is the better option for refreezing aloe vera.
