How To Make Your Own Aloe Vera

[Music] I’m Dr. Michael Haley and I pulled these off of some plants in the yard. There’s a video before this one that shows how I removed them and you’ll see I did it in a unique way that kind of keeps the whole leaf in tack. Some of these are even connected here still. How did I take them off the plant? You’ll see in that video. But now I’m going to process these. And this can be a messy process so I’m going to over my garbage can here. I’m going to cut the ends off and as soon as I start doing that they’re going to be bleeding out this sappy yellow stuff very bitter stains everything.

I’ve already washed these leaves by the way. …a little more than that as I cut the spines off and you can see this sappy mess here. I’m gonna put this in a bucket.

And what’s in the bucket?

I have the bucket full of water to kind of let that sappy stuff bleed out.

Is it warm water?

It’s just room temperature tap water which means it also has a little bit of chlorine which is kind of cleaning to the leaves cleaning them disinfecting them even though I washed them already.

(I’m) being careful to keep this over the garbage can when I do this because I don’t want that stuff to drip on the rug and stain it.

What kind of knife are you using?

This is… well it’s kind of got a sort of a sharp edge but it’s an old broken knife that I’ve been using forever. It happens to be my favorite one for this because it’s small it makes it easy to use for this part.

So, it doesn’t need to be super sharp?

Well, it doesn’t hurt on this part – it’s the other part that I’m going to do that a dull knife is probably… oops!

Okay google shut off timer.

Sorry.

That’s okay.

[Laughter] Does that mean…

We are live.

Do we have something cooking in there that we need to stop?

Can you just shut it off?

Sure. okay… all right… We’re doing 10 leaves which I’m curious how many leaves it’s going to take to make a half a gallon of drink.

[Music]

That’s ten of them. So I cut the spines off and you can see what it looks like. Now you can kind of see through it and all it has is the skins on each side that still has to be removed. And I’m gonna let these sit in the water for about five minutes. You can see that the water is starting to turn brown. It’s a white bucket and the water was clear but it’s… well, turning at least yellow a yellow green. I’m going to kind of flatten this down on the table and just push a dull blade right through it. Now this, by the way, still has some gel on it and I can really do well getting that off – or if you want, you can use this for like a… I mean, really treat your whole body with it. But let’s continue doing what we were doing here.

And if you want to be picky like me you’ll probably take all the green off. So it might take a little while, but that is certainly not going to hurt you. Some people put the whole aloe leaf right in – skin and all. They don’t even bother filleting and they just put this right in the blender. Now let’s see, I thought I was gonna put this in the bowl but let me just put it right in the blender and then the skins we’ll get rid of. On the farm we put the skins parts back into the fields. They’re compost.

I’ll save a couple of the skins for the camera lady.

You read my mind.

I was thinking how much of it you’re wasting. Yeah ladies, don’t throw that out; use it on your skin, on your face, chop it up, put it in the refrigerator, take one piece out, use it, and throw it away. But that there is not garbage. In my book. It’s gold. [Music]

[Music] For those thinking I’m being dangerous, this is not a knife. that is not a sharp edge. You’re not going to cut yourself on it.

It’s one of those tools you use to put frosting on a cake.

Which we do all the time around here. [laughter]

We dream about it. Well, at least the camera girl does [Music]

[Music] we got Two more leaves to go. But let’s see how much aloe we get out of these eight leaves. And I’m going to put it on my Vitamix.

I definitely have some green in there – more so than people are getting when they purchase from us. All right. And I’m gonna put this on a low speed to start and probably leave it there and use the tamper to push this down in there. One of the problems when you’re blending aloe is it foams up which is why I’m going to try this. But what’s not happening so well – it’s so slippery in there the fillets aren’t really getting down there. So I’m going to have to create a little suction which is why I’m going to turn this up a little bit.

You see all kinds of green chunks in there… that’s completely normal. It’s not going to be harmful. Remember I already bled out the aloin content.

All right, I don’t know if there’s any fillets in there or not left, so let me just do a little pouring into this container and see what happens. Now it is expanded – it is foamed up. It will settle in about 20 minutes.

And you see the bottle has an “H” on it. That’s because it’s my last name (Haley) and we wrote it on there because I know it’s a bottle that we reuse again and again and again. Okay so it almost filled it up but it is kind of aerated and foamy so that’ll probably settle down to about here or so.

We got two more leaves to fillet to finish making our half gallon of aloe. If you want the best aloe vera there is, this is what you have to do. If you want the next best thing, you get it made from us already and what we do is put these in the freezer for you and ship them to you frozen. Obviously fresh is the best.

If you’re wondering if we do get our get our hands in your product you really have to check out our youtube video and see it of the plant where they’re filleting really quickly. We show you the whole process so you can feel good about it and know, indeed, that’s a very clean process. But if you’re going to do your own at home, this is what it’s going to look like… I suspect.

[Music] Look how yellow this water is [Music]

So one of these… the reason I have this bucket here by the way, some people purchase the aloe in these buckets. And it’s a five gallon bucket. But because it’s frozen, we only put four gallons of aloe because it expands when it freezes. So you can actually get the aloe like this in these bottles which as you can see is about… about 10 leaves you got to let that settle down a little bit more. It’s mostly foam from here up. But about 10 leaves per bottle which means a bucket is going to be about 80 leaves of aloe. And you can find those on our website already done for you already processed – shipped frozen to you – four gallon buckets or the half gallon bottles. There’s actually 58 ounces in these bottles and four gallons and 10 ounces in the buckets which would actually make nine of these bottles. All right, that’s it.

What about having a drink?

Have a drink? [laughter] of foamy aloe? Actually this is going to be fun, okay? Because…

This is what I’ve been waiting for!

Waiting for this? [Laughter] Okay, should I start with that part right there? Yes.

This one’s still a little foamy but I’m going to try it anyway. No it’s puring out straight foam. Which it’s going to hurt me… it’s just going to be a mustache…

there it is. All right. Mustache intended.

I’m Dr Michael Haley from Haley Nutrition. Thanks for watching
