Mr. Rodney M. Stockton “The Aloe Man”

Mr. Stockton’s exceptional life experiences could provide the basis of a motion picture script. From his contribution to the development of cellophane, to the development and growth of a business centered on a certain unique species of Aloe vera, it would be easy to trace the path of an American success story.

In the 1950’s, Stockton introduced the benefits of Aloe vera to the American public, and by the 1970’s, his name had become synonymous with “Aloe.” The unique Aloe plant he identified, cultivated, and championed exhibits unique medicinal properties, beyond those of any other species of Aloe.

Talking with the 84 year-old Rodney Stockton was truly an uplifting and informative experience. His positive attitude and amazing physical appearance provided testimony to a lifestyle that included the consumption of 8 oz. of Aloe gel every day. The result was evident in his eyes, his demeanor, and in his vibrant health.

Following is a timeline of Rodney Stockton and Stockton Aloe.

1913: Rodney Stockton was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 3, 1913. Both his mother and father were circuit-riding ministers in the Illinois Methodist conference. The Stockton Family tree can be traced directly back to Richard Stockton, whose signature is found on the United States Declaration of Independence.

1936: Stockton obtained a position as a chemical engineer with Sylvania Industries, where he assisted in the development of a new product called “cellophane.” The original clear cellophane product ripped very easily. In an effort to correct this problem, Mr. Stockton suggested adding color pigments to the cellophane to toughen the product. The result was the creation of amber cellophane. Today, amber cellophane is used world-wide to wrap wheat and rye bread.

1943: During World War II, Mr. Stockton served with the War Food Administration, where he refined methods of distributing dried eggs and beef to troops overseas.

1944: Per request from the U.S. Quartermaster Corps, Stockton developed an oil suspension system to keep eggs fresh without refrigeration.

1947: During a vacation to Florida in 1941, Stockton suffered a severely painful sunburn. Remembering this experience, he embarked on a personal quest for an effective burn remedy. Stockton’s search led him to a Seminole Indian medicine man and a rare species of Aloe vera.

1948 – 1949: Almost two years of research and cultivation were required to stabilize the therapeutic factors in the gel of the Seminole Aloe plant. The final result is deemed the Aloe barbadensis miller-stockon species.

1951: Rodney Stockton started ALO CREME LABORATORIES to market his Seminole Aloe Gel Ointment for the treatment of burns and skin irritations. This same year Stockton began to consume the raw Aloe gel daily, and he selectively began to distribute the gel for internal use and therapeutic purposes.

1953: Owing to customer satisfaction and word of mouth advertising, Stockton’s company, ALO CREME LABORATORIES, realized significant profits.

1954: A Chicago, Illinois, dermatologist observed that Stockton’s Aloe ointment could be used to clear up rashes and blemishes. He encouraged Stockton to formulate Aloe products in a lower concentration liquid form for use as cosmetics.

1955: Stockton raised capital by a public stock offering of ALO CREME LABORATORIES. Using the revenue from the stock sale, he hired scientists to develop an Aloe-based line of cosmetics.

1956: A physician in Florida tested the efficacy of the ointment by applying it to the wounds of a man who had been terribly burned by hot pitch. Not only did the treated section heal much faster than the non-treated areas, there was no scarring. News spread quickly. Doctors and hospitals began using and recommending the ointment.

1957: Stockton’s Aloe Ointment is granted final FDA approval as a burn treatment. Stockton’s company, ALO CREME LABORATORIES, received a government contract from the General Administration Services. ALO CREME LABORATORIES now listed 14 items. The products were being distributed both in the United States and abroad.

1959: Based on the proven value of his unique species of Aloe vera in the treatment of thermal burns, Mr. Stockton was invited by Colonel Frank Voris, USAF, to become a member of the United States Aerospace Medical Association.

1960s: Mr. Stockton’s Aloe Ointment is used by NASA to protect and treat astronauts for lip and skin irritations associated with space travel.

1961: Two major cosmetic companies tendered offers to acquire ALO CREME LABORATORIES. When denied, one resorted to industrial sabotage, unsuccessfully attempting to pirate and reproduce Stockton’s Aloe species.

1963: At age 50, Stockton married 27 year-old Joan Barnes.

1963 -1973: With an increasing focus on the profitable Aloe cosmetic line, ALO CREME LABORATORIES was now realizing annual earnings 125 times its working capital. Stockton gained the most satisfaction, however, from letters of thanks received from customers who were consuming his raw Aloe gel for therapeutic reasons.

1968: Rodney and Joan Stockton become the proud and doting parents of a lovely baby girl, Denise Stockton.

1974: Stockton’s company is providing Aloe cosmetics and ointment to the nation and the world. The company name is synonymous with Aloe products. Hoping to cash in on Stockton’s success, other companies begin trying to infringe on his trademarks.

1975: On Oct. 9, 1975 the United States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board rendered a 26-page decision in favor of ALO CREME LABORATORIES. The decision stated “The scope and protection should extend to preclude the registration of any trademark for cosmetics and ointments containing the term ALO or even ALOE.” This federal court acknowledged that, to the American consumer, the use of the name “Aloe” on certain consumer products was synonymous with Rodney Stockton and his company ALO CREME LABORATORIES.

1976 – 1983: ALO CREME LABORATORIES enjoyed increasing success. Products were now being placed in health food, drug, and department stores throughout North America. Stockton’s raw Aloe gel had shown itself to be a great benefit to many critically ill patients. He received many letters, telling of the healings that have been experienced.

1983: At age 70 Rodney Stockton, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ALO CREME LABORATORIES, sold his majority stock holdings to company employees. He retired to spend time with his wife and daughter.

1989: Lacking Stockton’s leadership and knowledge ALO CREME LABORATORIES had floundered and was declared bankrupt.

1989: After the closing of ALO CREME LABORATORIES, Stockton was personally besieged with requests for product from former customers. They were in a panic over the prospect of losing their source of “genuine Aloe products.” Wishing to accommodate loyal customers and old friends, Rodney Stockton established Aloe #1 Laboratories.

Rodney Stockton consumed 8 ounces of Aloe barbadensis miller-stockton raw Aloe gel every day, beginning in 1951. He looked and acted like someone at least 20 years younger. The results of a physical examination taken in 1997 were as follows:

X-rays revealed the bone density of a man 35-40 years old

1997-2009: Rodney Stockton was able to educate and help many people through his raw Aloe gel, now sold as Aloe #1 Health Drink. The original Aloe #1 Ointment with 70% Aloe vera gel was also kept available to the many people who wanted and needed it. He was active in the daily work of running a business up to age 96, when he succumbed to a heart attack. He left us July 1, 2009.
Those who knew him remarked that Rodney was expecting to continue to provide the public with his life-giving Aloe for many more years. But God had different plans. Joan Stockton was then left to continue his great work, but was not able to do it by herself. After a year of hardship, Joan decided to pass the reins to Rodney’s long-time friend Dr. Michael Haley.

2010: Stockton Aloe 1, Inc. was born to carry on the legacy of “The Aloe Man.” Stockton Aloe began providing the same unique barbadensis miller-stockton species of Aloe that Rodney had worked tirelessly to make available to the public.

2011: Stockton Aloe introduced the new Youth-Derm® Ultra Healing Aloe Cream. The formula maintained the 70% Aloe vera  gel concentration of the original formula, updated with organic glycerin, shea butter, and other natural ingredients.

2013: Stockton Aloe still relies ONLY on the Aloe barbadensis miller-stockton species for its products. The customer base continues to grow as more and more people turn away from treatments that address symptoms only and turn to natural and herbal remedies that have stood the test of the centuries.
